No Small Thing

love is a thing, but it is no small thing.

Excerpt:

Kate had never expected to find true love. Had given the ideal up as nothing more
than a fool’s dream. She’d went on living and working as if love between a man and
woman was a fairy tale. A sweet notion, but one as vaporous as mist rising off a pot of
boiling water. She would’ve been happy to go on thinking in such a way. What would
it have hurt her? Would she have awoken one night years from now trembling in her
sleep, saddened that her chance to live life, to really live life had passed her by and all
that she had was a head full of regret and a belly of anger? Or would it begin much
sooner, much more subtler than that. Each year passing, the light of life growing
dimmer and dimmer as she made her way through this world alone, without a
companion?

Too many questions. Not enough answers. Anyway, what did it matter in the end?
Wasn’t it enough to have loved at all, no matter to what end it had come?

Kate considered this last as the world around her continued its respectful hush. A tear,
salty and warm, loosed itself and slid a trail down her hot cheek.

Yes, she thought. Yes.

To love for a single moment, to be loved by another for the same moment, was worth
everything. No matter for how long, or for how brief, it was worth it.
