Robert Caulder wanted to be a writer,
but not just any writer. Caulder wanted
the critical acceptance of Steinbeck, of
Hemingway, of Fitzgerald and he wanted
the fame, fortune and everything else
that came with success. Only problem
was, he just couldn’t write, not very well,
at least. Then after a near-fatal car
accident, he suddenly can. From the
bowels of a Mississippi small town to the
top of the national bestseller lists, he is
on his way to stardom. Unfortunately,
the horrors that he creates for his
adorning fans aren’t content to remain
on paper. And that’s when the real
horror begins.
Excerpt:
His sleep started peaceful enough.
Random flashes projected on the big
blank screen of his mind’s eye.
Childhood memories, portraits of long
ago friends, former flames, flickered on
and off, then darkness.
And the darkness began to revolve, to
spin, in a maddening rotation. How he
knew that the darkness moved when he
could see nothing, but darkness was an
enigma. He could feel the motion as if it
were as real as the blood coursing
through his veins.
Death came like a thief in the night.
The words echoed as if shouted inside a
cave or across a great canyon. The
voice that carried them, however, was
neither harsh nor asinine. If Rob were to
call the timbre of voice anything, he
would call it phantomlike, even ghostlike.
Though powerful, the resonance was
light, almost sublime.
Then, a light appeared, far off in the
distance. Even as Rob saw it, he was
beginning to be pulled closer to it. It
began like a twinkling star in the black
canopy of night. But as he drew closer, it
turned into a huge rectangular crevice
of light in a shadowed landscape. While
his world was still absent of light, except
for that ahead of him, the light that
leaked from the edges of the doorway—
yes, that’s what it was, he recognized it
now—gave shape and form to his
surroundings, a soft definition to his
environment.
Rob weightlessly floated through this
dark abyss toward the waiting white light.
He paddled with his arms and legs as if
he were swimming in a surging river,
attempting to slow his unfettered inertia.
But there was no stopping it. He was
flying fast now, soaring like an eagle in
the dead of night.

Fiction eBook Review
(Horror) Bestseller by Keith
Latch
Not normally a reader of the
horror genre, I was
pleasantly surprised Keith
Latch’s new novel, titled
“Bestseller”. Following with
its title this one promises to
become a Bestselling
eBook itself!
I think it’s important to note
the reasons why I wouldn’t
normally read horror
novels, before I actually get
to my thoughts on Keith’s
new book. It isn’t that I don’
t enjoy the genre - I do.
Normally though, anything I
have read outside of works
by Stephen King, Dean R.
Koontz, or occasionally
John Saul have fallen short
of my expectations. Most
novels in this genre tend to
either be so out there that
the plot gets lost in the
weird, or they tend to be all
gore and guts which is also
a turn off (of course that
doesn’t take into account
the repetitiveness of many
new authors in this genre).
My way of thinking was
suddenly changed when I
read Bestseller. Here is a
new horror novel that it
completely unique, original
in its representations of the
supernatural, and is a
thoroughly enjoyable read.
With this one, I couldn’t put
it down. I read it from start
to finish with only a few
hours to sleep in between.
The book is completely
enthralling, and will draw
you in.
Without giving away any of
the storyline:
Bestseller tells the tale of
one man who after
dreaming of becoming a
writer for many years
suddenly finds his dream.
After an accident that
almost killed him Robert
Caulder is given what
seems to be a gift - the gift
of the written word. He
finally realizes the much
sought after success he has
always wanted as a writer.
All is not rosy on the other
side of the fence however,
and throughout the first half
of the book we walk with
Caulder through divorce, a
rise to fame, and ultimately
to his own trip down the
road of no return. Just as
you think he has finally
figured it all out and may
just make things right
again, we reach the twist in
the plot; and this one really
is worth waiting for.
I think where this novel
really differs from every
other horror novel I have
ever read is in the
storyline. Keith takes the
time to build a good plot, to
make well rounded
characters that you will
love, hate, and relate to. He
also makes the novel
suspenseful enough that
you won’t want to quit
reading.
I won’t give away anymore
of the story, but I am
definitely recommending
this eBook to anyone
interested in finding that
next great read. With this
one Keith has earned one
new fan for sure (me), and if
all of his other novels are
this good, I expect that he
will see great success in his
writing career.
